vision'R Claire on her project Alice Special iPodU Session Response
One of the many artists and performers from vision'R Claire talks about her process and the concept behind the work "Alice." Please watch this talk and post your response.
Alice In Wonderland- cut out drawings animated, wish I could see this. Alot of these artist have myspace pages as there website. What is with that? I hate myspace, its always so distracting with all the ads and you cant navigate well without being a member.
Another artist who originated from drawing then moved too video. Combination of drawing into video. Physical to digital. Iv done this myself as well, i save the drawings/doodles I make in my notebooks and scan them into my computer and have tried animating the designs and doodles on my computer. Paper > Scanner > Vector > Motion.
Start with one picture - construct story in head. Performances arent usually the same, keep building, improve.
Claire's videos are really experimental and she does a lot of unique, interesting stuff. I'm thinking of stealing an aspect of one of her videos for my final (if I can get it to actually look good). I don't get to see a lot of artist's videos. I see the junk on youtube but not the great stuff that we got to see because of this class. It certainly helps me with my own work. Some of their techniques, layering, montage, repetition, anything, I would have never thought of.
What I really enjoyed about the idea of this piece was taking a very familiar, very traditional narrative and creating a whole new representation of it. The story of Alice in Wonderland is one that is very familiar to many of us but being able to represent that in an interesting way, especially through multiple media, it creates a truly interesting piece.
Related to what we've done in this course, we don't often try to use a traditional narrative. We search for new ways of representation of story structure and visual production. Something such as our final project really asks us to think outside of the normal definition of three different words that have a very obvious and infamous connotation. The idea of this project really shows how a traditional narrative can be molded to show a new representation through multiple media.
Alice in Wonderland. Using only one part of the story (the fall). One moment, capturing a moment.
Video never stops.
Motion/Concept of Motion. Moving from one stage to the next, the moment.
Mixing mediums. It depends on the person whether you should be well versed in more than one medium.
Breaking out of a cinematic structure. New ways of telling a story.
Using older ideas and combining them with something else can really make an interesting piece (falling video and Alice in Wonderland). Sometimes all an idea needs is to be updated and it can become something very different.
What struck me was she and her friend's wanting to collaborate not just by Claire using her computer and her friend playing her cello, but by working together in a new way. Capturing the moment of falling, trying to freeze time to replay that one moment. That is something I am interested in, to capture a moment, and allow it to be explored fully. What she said about mixing mediums grabbed me, because you can get interesting results from using many different tools in any sort of creative endeavor.
Alice in wonderland has had such an influence on our world it seems that everyone has an interpretation. From what I gathered she is using alice in wonderland to explain the video art world. I think it is really important to have another visual discipline. I try to use as many photographs in my videos doing montage is my favorite thing. I think that taking a lot of photos help me visualize framing and lighting. I can't find any videos from Clare. You guys say she has a myspace. The Vision'R website is a complete, many languages.
Alice in Wonderland is a very interesting story and can be looked at in many ways, I t cold be seen as a simple Childs story, or to have religious or political connotation, and again in an artistic visual piece as Claire has done. It’s a good example to show us that work can be interrupted in many ways and there is no set meaning. Its how you look at a apiece, and depending on your background you will see it differently. i believe I will take this with me and really think about the way people would view my work. As Jake said, with our final project we have to think outside of the box using words that have very specific meanings. Also the green fuse poem, and al the others 3045 works has made us do the same thing, of not representing things all the time as a specific index but to look beyond the meaning of a word or story.
I checked out clares myspace page. I think what makes her work interesting is she uses multi-media. Not just the new but the old forms as well.
I think the video where she films the lego men is interesting. She may be investigating why we are amused by this. Why is video like this intriguing, why are cartoons entertaining for people of all ages? I think her work is important because it challenges people to think, why they are watching. It can’t be about the actors when they are toy legos, however the video is interesting. She may be challenging the issue of content.
Alice inspires me to try to find less traditional means of using video for "storytelling". With my final piece i will attempt to create animation out of video, similar to the shortcuts Ralph Bakshi took with his animated films in the early 80's. When simplified enough, it is hard to tell the difference between animation and the human silhouette. By making all of my characters silhouettes, expression of emotion will be removed from the face and placed entirely on body language and context.
I just finished looking through her myspace and I'm blown away. The opening sequence to the first video on the right side is visually stunning. The piece as a whole is fantastic, but I really enjoyed the opening sequence just before the screenshot transition. I also like the 2nd piece that has a long shutter overlay on top of a slow motion car sequence, really a nice concept. She's really an inspiring figure, and I liked how people where excited about being on camera and playing with it. That was pretty funny.

Yeah, her myspace is myspace.com/a_li_ce. Her videos are worth checking out, at least I think so.
There is a video on the alice performance. It's interesting to watch the artist work. You get to see that in a live performance, to some degree.
