Hello,
I had Matt Leavitt set this up so there is a kind of virtual meeting space for the class you all can interact with each other and post comments and we can use this for non-linear discussions.
see you here-

Im really interested how my a2 assignment will turn out. I haven't done alot of research but does the human eye even see at 60 frames a second? Do we only actually see a portion of the images? Im curious if the outcome of the story varies as too what images one interprets because one person may see one set of photos and another will see another set., 3600 images is alot of pictures and I know the human brain cant inturput all 3600 in one minute separately but it takes them in as a clump. I liked the comments on how old time based media came from story telling and theater and how the camera has enabled us to not only film storys and acts but alter time. We can essential record and alter reality in an extremely realistic way and create emotion, suspense, action, and so on.. The camera gives us the ability to change "reality time" into whatever kind of variation we can come up with. You can pause it, rewind it, change the frame rate, edit, and so on. We can alter time, and put it into whatever kinda time or variation we want, create our own world .
-you have to be careful with length of video and make sure it keeps the viewers attention. Longer videos if not done well can make it hard to watch.
-We will find iconic pictures mostly with our images searches Iconic: direct reference to the thing(s) itself. Symbol is something representing something else. Index can refer to anything with reference to the subject.
-if you look at a family photo album with your family is there a different way of interrupting the photo as compared to a set of similar family photos in an art gallery? Whats the difference?
Context: art as compared to personal family photos we view them different. People view things different in a gallery as compared too just viewing the images in your house.
-steam of images use batch processor to make every image 720 x 480 at 72-dpi > then put in after effects > organize in folders
-look for the visual poetic in video, time based imagery.
-look for concrete imagery use concrete words. "I have a noise, ears, lips, those are all concrete things avoid abstraction.

When I first heard about the 3600 project it worried me. Mostly because I did not know the context in which we would be using the images. The scope of the project is still a little daunting, but interesting none the less. When we talked in class about context adding meaning to something, it got me thinking about how to create context within the piece itself. Or using the medium consciously to create the context. Based on some of the readings, which said that digital screens have allowed the passage of time to be displayed on a spatial plane, this project opens up to a lot more than just a sequence of a lot of different images.
3600 images
720 X 480 at 72 dpi
All images the same size (using a batch process in photoshop)
60/frames sec, 1 minute long video
Notes
3 thing covered in this class: Superimposition, Montage, Frame Rate
*sequential nature of image
*Photography allowed us to capture multiple moments in time, eventually led to filmmaking. Artists felt as though their jobs were taken away. Revolution occurred when we moved from capturing a single moment in time to multiple moments with film.
*The context determines how you will respond to the artwork and get meaning from it
*Images in different contexts will have different meanings (example of images in museum vs. your family photos)
*Project will be a process of decontextualizing images
*Semiotics-how meaning works, it is important to apply semiotics to images
*As humans we look for meaning in everything
I think it would be interesting to do the project using images showing movement. Figures or objects in different positions would give a sense of movement throughout the movie.

-3 essential features of the class
Superposition
Montage
Frame rate
-Sequence nature of image-
A1-how images work together in fluid scenes
cartouches hieroglyphs-
images that could communicate information
-time based imagery
-what we’re working with in terms of technology is not unique/ necessary-- we experience the world in time, day to day, hour to hour
--time based experience-form of storytelling
capture multiple moments in early film
~"tools" allow you to do a different experience of time based media
~think of content and how the tools influences how we work in the medium or expresses what we want to say through it
every expressions you make or want to say its augmented by the media-gives you limitations-or gives you the ability to do things
PHOTOGRAPHY
-b4 camera- aperture images by drawings
-use photograph to enhance image ( to make more realistic painting) back then
-used as a means of expression
_revolutions to capturing a single moment in-time to putting multiple--
--quick transitions -rapid technolgy from film to video technology (capture in real time and deliver in real time)
Single image (photo)
-can be interrupted different ways
-its shows a lot with out describing it
-meaning
describe what the image is about what it makes us feel and think so on and so forth
context of how you see a photo will decipher how you will respond to it As we said in class, the way you look at a photo depends on how the photo is deciphered. The individual could look at an image and see something completely different because of their mood, setting, or personal connection to the image. The 3600 image will be a good challenge because as stated “I picture can say a 100 words” because it already tells you so much by whats in it, but also how its interpreted” I hope that my 3600 image project will be able to have a clear statement but also be open to interpretation. All good artwork is able to reach out to many individuals because it touches each person in a different way, but with some connecting string.
think about the still image and the impact of it
icon index and symbol
each word comes in a sequence and points to the words in-front of it and the next refers to the word after (back and forth back and forth)
“We look for meaning in EVERYTHING!!!” I found this statement very true, and thought of how I constantly am looking for meaning on everything, but also how we tend to force meaning and manipulate it to what we want to see or even here.
when we look at an image especially in a specific content-or in a sequence we try to derive a deep amount of meaning
-approach get 3600 images of internet and get them off the internet
distal (over all view of a certain system)
-see if you can define a pattern or order to create some theme or design for these
7 stanza poem
lines 135 thousand each then 600 images between lines 2 4-sets up a pattern or organized system
1 minute to 2 1/2 minutes (longer it is the hardest to watch it) thinks about it for when your putting it together-extend it out will make it harder
when sequencing---Icon Index Symbol
when you gather off the internet-- (icon is representation of the things itself)
due the 1st
-gather the images through the internet
What I found very interesting about this lecture, as has been briefly mentioned in other comments, was the narrative nature of image. In the past, photographers would use a single photograph (frame) to capture a whole series of motion, movement, and passage of time. With the introduction of film it was easier than ever to capture a narrative because we finally have the capability to show multiple frames that show multiple actions.
Through the use of digital tools we have an easier time, but also a more interesting landscape, with which we can display narrative. Whether it be streaming 3600 images together into one concise narrative or creating a film that shows a persons actions over time, we are able to do these things more efficiently and have, in a sense, redefined the creator and the audience.
The discussion that continues to come back with regards to design are the terms icon, index, and symbol. (As a refresher)
Icon -- a representation of the thing itself
Index -- a thing that points to the thing (reference)
symbol -- a thing that represents something else
I'm sure that throughout the semester we will be using all of these terms in great abundance and everyone should probably keep coming back to these as you design, create, and build your projects for this amazing nmd304 course!
After watching the examples of A2 from Raphael's IDisk, at first the project seemed a little intimidating, but exciting. There are so many images being displayed that each time I watched one over, I seemed to usually get a different meaning from the previous time I watched it.
Since I'm guessing that most of the class will have concrete images of something based on words from their poems, I think it would be a neat exercise if after everyone has posted their A2 and everyone else has had sufficient time to watch several of their classes, if each person, based on what they mentally gathered from their class mates projects, took a guess at writing the poem of the project. Then after some time, each person would post their actual poem and see how close other peoples guesses came to the actual poems. I only thought of this because my poem was very simeple and concrete and I don't think it would be too difficult, after viewing my images, to make a relatively close guess as to what my poem was about.

The A2 project seemed very daunting at first glance but as time has passed since i first looked at it, it doesn't seem so bad. While gathering the pictures really doesn't seem to be a problem the arranging of them does seem to pose certain questions. For instance if you change the length of time a picture is shown or the order in which it is shown the idea/message of your piece could change completely. On top of that each viewer is going to come up with his/her own idea as to what the piece is about and its meaning to each person will be different. So the issue is finding that perfect arrangement that gets your ideas across to others.
It was also good to get a refresher in icon, index, symbol. Less than a semester has gone by since i learned about them and i was already unsure of what each meant. The more they are used, the easier it will get to remember them though.

The Patrick of January 2008 is gathering images for his NMD304 A2, rapid-fire photomontage. He is wondering if he should be weeding out imagery that is a misinterpretation of the words in his poem. Can the apparently inane imagery derived from my image searches still be utilized to create the feeling this piece needs? Should i just include it and see how it changes the work? Patrick of 2008 also struggled to write a poem with imagery concrete enough to be conveyed through still images. Nature has been a big inspiration, because its so damn observable. Describing the height and color of a pretty tree in images is very easy as opposed to finding images to convey the meaning of fear or love.
The narration of images is one that is often over looked in story telling. I think images can tell a better story then even video. Video can be overwhelming with images that a viewer sometimes misses the point the artist was trying to make. A photo is a point in time, one frame. This frame has to be perfect to tell this story. Photos in someways tell that story better because a view can take the time to really review a scene and take in the meaning that a photographer is trying to convey. With video I feel that meaning is far more literal. Lighting depth of field and exposure are much harder to manipulate because you are using a large piece of time. You need to maintain perfect setting for a sustained period of time.
This was the 3600 project and while this assignment caused me much heart ache I think this is some of the best work I have done.
